My Guaraná Experience: Suzy Discusses Android Development

With a fascination of wanting to explore Canada and experience a snowy winter, Suzy Paeta came to Montreal all the way from Nice, France and began working with Guaraná as of March 2018 as an Android developer.

Ever since a young age, Suzy has always been interested in science and logic, “Being a developer means having a lot of logic, organization and practical thinking. I also loved gadgets as a kid. With all that combined it led me to go into computer sciences and I loved it.” Suzy has completed a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Computer Sciences and was even able to attain an internship in Amsterdam as part of her program where she gained in-depth knowledge about Android development.

On a daily basis at Guaraná, Suzy works on new applications, maintains older apps, fixes bugs, adds new features to the customers’ apps and assists the other Android developers on the team. She really appreciates and enjoys working on the diversity of projects introduced to her at work.

Suzy says that in computer sciences everything is logical and makes sense, “You’re creating something, so it’s super cool. Just by writing some lines you can see something happening. You can really build something interesting and useful for people. Mobile development is so amazing because you can do everything from the little thing in your pocket. There is an app for everything. And when you make apps, you can use your own product which is quite cool.”

In terms of tools and resources, Suzy looks at the news, the Android blog and Kotlin website every day to check up on all current updates. She also finds it helpful to consult her Android developer friends to discuss any advancements in the field. Another helpful resource is the Medium website where people discuss very specific and advanced Android development topics, she said, “You can learn a lot from the community. It’s usually people facing the same problem as you. It’s not written by the God of Android, it’s written by people like you.”

As the interview concluded, Suzy shared a few words to help out future aspiring developers, “If you want to be good at what you’re doing, you have to spend time working on it. Don’t give up, spend time, try to talk to people around you doing this job. Try to find the domain that you like the most.”
